“Just a Good Guy…With a Few Bad Habits”

Ulster Scots

Ulster-Scots, or Scots-Irish in American nomenclature, are Lowland Scots who were sent to Northern Ireland by the English Crown in the 1600’s in an attempt to “civilize” the native Irish. These people were mainly Presbyterians, as opposed to the native Irish Catholics.

It took only a few generations for the English Lords to figure out that the transplants were even crazier and more uncontrollable than the natives, at which time they began shipping the Ulster-Scots to America. A testament to the rebellious nature of the Ulster-Scots is found in this statement by General George Washington: “If defeated everywhere else, I will make my last stand for liberty among the Scots-Irish of my native Virginia.”

To make a long story short, I am very proud of my more recently discovered Ulster-Scot heritage. Discovering this fact of my ancestry has made my independent streak, and personality quirks, make sense. It bolsters my assumption that my “mental illness” is, in fact, genetic.

Recently, I spent some time looking into the “Loyal Orange Institution,” thinking a connection with this organization might help solidify a connection with my distant past.

Everything was was running smoothly, I was on the path to a public association with this venerable group when I read the following statement:

“Prudence and loyalty should guide all his actions; temperance, charity, and honesty direct his conduct, and the laudable objects of the Orange Institution should be the motives of all his endeavors through life.”

Loyalty? To a fault.

Charity? I was raised to always help those less fortunate.

Honesty? In all things, except my own exploits; in which case I feel free to take poetic license when it will make for a better story.

Prudence and Temperance?

I guess I am “Native Irish” after all!

  1. You’re sure you want to associate with the Orange. The ones that honestly believe the Irish are too stupid and a lower form of life than their English counterparts to run their own country? The ones who are politically responsible for the long history of occupation and colonization of the North.

Huge difference in an Ulster-Scot and a Ulster-Scot Orange Order.

  3. All I know is I started reading I saw red then blacked out from pure rage….I should have held on to the end. I also should have known better than to think you of all people would embrace such an order as the Orange…..Now the thought makes me shudder.
