“Just a Good Guy…With a Few Bad Habits”

Thought For The Day

with one comment

As my wife and I were riding to the “Salvation Saloon” service at Boomer’s Roadhouse this morning, a thought occured to me:

States that repeal mandatory helmet laws see an immediate increase in motorcyle registrations. This means they see an increase in revenue to the state government from registration fees and local businesses see more revenue from tourist dollars which, in turn, translates to even more revenue to the state in the form of increased sales tax revenue. In a state like Michigan where Governorette Grandtheft has managed to total the economy wouldn’t every dollar count?

Apparently, when your top elected official is a tool of the insurance lobby, it doesn’t.

Try this equation on for size:

Helmet Law Repeal = More Motorcycles on the road

More Motorcyles on the road = More revenue to the state government and local businesses

However, more motorcycles on the road also equates to more motorcyclists becoming target practice for inattentive drivers which, in turn, translates to insurance companies actually having to pay settlements to injured bikers. From the insurance lobby perspective the equation looks more like this:

Mandatory Helmet Law = Fewer Motorcycles on the road

Fewer Motorcycles on the road = Less money paid in claims

Less money paid in claims = More money for campaign contributions to their favorite mole faced socialist

So the question is: Are helmet laws really about safety? Or are we really living in the Land of the Bottom Line?
