“Just a Good Guy…With a Few Bad Habits”

Memorial Day

with 2 comments

As a veteran and a student of history, Memorial Day has a special meaning for me. For the past eight years I have participated in our community’s Memorial Day parade as a member of the fire department Honor Guard. It saddens me to see how few people realize that this is a ceremony that should be solemnly observed. While standing at attention I have literally had women run up to me and yell:”You smile at my kids!!”

I never forget the sacrifice of those servicemen and women who have gone on before me, and I always do my best to honor them on this day. It’s too bad that every year fewer and fewer people have a sense of what this day is all about.

I came across this article some time ago and reprint it here as a reminder of why we should hold Veterans in the highest esteem and give them their due respect, not just today, but everyday:

It is the VETERAN, not the preacher, who has given us freedom of religion.

It is the VETERAN, not the reporter, who has given us freedom of the press.

It is the VETERAN, not the poet, who has given us freedom of speech.

It is the VETERAN, not the campus organizer, who has given us freedom to assemble.

It is the VETERAN, not the lawyer, who has given us the right to a fair trial.

It is the VETERAN, NOT THE POLITICIAN, who has given us the right to vote (Harry Reid, Nancy Pelosi, John Murtha, Madame Clinton, John “Francois”Kerry et. al, would do well to remember that).

It is the VETERAN, who salutes the flag.

It is the VETERAN, who serves under the flag.

This country has had to fight for everything it has ever received, may God bless all those who serve her and protect our freedoms.

  2. Great post !!..Something that bugs the hell out of me…people that don’t know how to respect our Flag…Not standing and showing respect as the colors pass …Men not removing their hats, and standing as “Old Glory” passes…..I don’t know if they have ever been taught, if not, they need to learn !!!

Kids that come to parades for candy, rather than being taught respect for our Flag..idiot parents !!!
